Sustainability and manufacturing
Wood is renewable, reusable and bio- degradable. Svenskt Tenn has worked with wood since the 1930s and the material is also one of the most dominant in the company’s production today. But for wood to be a really good material from an environmental point of view, it should come from responsibly managed forests. All of Svenskt Tenn’s furniture suppliers and their wood suppliers are subject to the EU’s Timber Regulation, which has strict rules for the wood trade. This is to deal with the global problem of illegal logging and to counter trafficking in illegal timber and wooden goods within the EU.
Alongside the EU Timber Regulation, there are a large number of voluntary certification schemes for forest management and forest products. One of the most well known is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. FSC is an international organisation that promotes environmentally responsible forest management, but unlike other certifications, it also takes social and economic aspects into consideration. Svenskt Tenn wants to support FSC, and in the company’s purchasing rules for wood, we urge our furniture makers and their wood suppliers to manufacture our products in FSC- certified wood if possible. We also make sure to keep up the dialogue with our suppliers on this issue.
Gemla furniture factory has chosen to be at the forefront in terms of natural and environmentally friendly materials, and the energy used in the factory derives exclusively from green, renewable sources.
